Home is Where the Heart is

I was curious about a stump on our sidewalk that contained all sorts of items. On any given day, there might be jewelry, a ball, small toys, photos, bracelets, a squirt gun, and plastic flowers. Last week, I met a neighbor and asked her if she knew about the stump and its treasures. It turns out she is the caretaker, or care provider for the stump, which she referred to as as our “Boo Radley, from To Kill a Mockingbird.”

She leaves objects she finds in the neighborhood for kids or anyone to take. Items come and go, although she said movement has been slow recently. I shared that I had collected items for my animal displays in Toronto and she encouraged me to contribute. We both agreed that it makes us and hopefully others smile and have good feelings about our street. I added a small heart with “Mom” on it that I had found in Toronto. By the next day, it had found a new home
